Vincent Bach 10¾-W marching mellophone/large-shank flugelhorn mouthpiece set 3D renderings

These were made with VennCAD software from Vennture Mouthpieces, using scans of 2010s Vincent Bach 10¾CW & 10¾EW flugelhorn mouthpieces, and a 1980s Vincent Bach Corp. 10¾EW flugelhorn mouthpiece.

The idea was to create a marching mellophone mouthpiece with these designs, giving the performer several different cup depths with relatively the same rim. Many of the marching mouthpieces have a large inner diameter, but these use a smaller inner diameter and cushion rim for more support. The backbore is similar for all three.

These models originally had the Small Morse taper shank common to Bach flugelhorn mouthpieces, but these 3D models were designed with a 0.3850" / 9.779mm shank opening outer diameter, which is VennCAD's default standard for trumpet & mellophone mouthpieces. By using the original backbore with thicker shank, the shank opening is a bit less fragile.

Warning! However, these are not going to be as sturdy as Kelly molded Lexan or DEG Astro-Cup nylon-top mouthpieces.

The Materialise prints ordered are shown fitted with Bach Mercedes (Olds tooling) mellphone, and Amati-Kraslice B-226/AFH-201 flugelhorn (oversize Large Morse taper receiver).
The 10¾CWFL has the fullest sound overall with both horns, but the others are still good. The mellophone has uneven intonation to begin with and sounded decent, but the flugelhorn intonation was surprisingly balanced with these mouthpieces.

They can also be used with trumpets (especially pocket trumpets) for a darker "flumpet" sound as well, thought the 10¾CWFL is the best for approaching that. The Corp. 10¾EWFL approaches the Chuck Mangione sound...!

The different cup/funnel depths come from Bach's notorious inconsistency and design changes. The 2010s flugelhorn mouthpieces often have a straight funnel cup, whereas earlier models have a goblet-shaped cup. As the 10¾CW & 10¾EW have practically the same rim with different cup depths, so do the 2010s flugelhorn mouthpieces. The 10¾CWFL is deeper than the 10¾EWFL, and the custom-made Bach Corp. 10¾EWFL is slightly shallower still.

The exterior cup also mimics the internal cup, with the deepest model having a bulkier or "deeper" external cup, and the shallowest with a "shallower" external cup.

The VennCAD .mpc and .ref files are included in a Zip folder as well, for those interested in experimenting. Note: these only work with VennCAD. The .cmm coordinate measurement files are also included in the Zip folder.

No dimensions have been adjusted or modified for printing or cutting. This model is intended for experimentation, with the price intended to defray scanning costs.

These sizes are rendered 10-3/4CWFL & 10-3/4EWFL on the 2010s pieces, and 10¾EWFL on the 1980s piece. The Bach model codes on the 2010s pieces are 34210RCW & 34210REW.
Additionally, 10.75CWFL &10.75EWFL are used in some of the files, as well as 10 3-4 due to file name restrictions.

Printed in January 2024 by Materialise NV of Belgium, using their Gray Resin. From the specification page, it has accuracy of ±0.2% (with a lower limit of ±0.2mm) and 0.3mm clearance.

Rims were sanded with Gator 600-grit finishing sandpaper, but scratched the cup inside.

Note that the shank opening is somewhat thin and fragile with resin prints.

The 10¾CWFL has overall length 72.92 mm / 2.871", and [greatest] outer diameter of 28.83 mm / 1.135".
The 10¾EWFL has overall length 73.04 mm / 2.876", and [greatest] outer diameter of 28.71 mm / 1.131".
The Corp. 10¾EWFL has overall length 72.94 mm / 2.872", and [greatest] outer diameter of 28.69 mm / 1.129".
