Description
Checkpoint Charlie (or "Checkpoint C") was the best-known Berlin Wall crossing point between East Berlin and West Berlin during the Cold War (1947–1991), as named by the Western Allies. "You Are Leaving the American Sector" in English, Russian, French, and German at Checkpoint Charlie became a symbol of the Cold War.
It was intended to warn those leaving the American sector of Berlin that they were entering the Soviet-occupied East Berlin area. This sign has since become a symbol of the division of East and West Berlin and is a popular tourist attraction, often replicated in museums and memorials related to the Cold War.
