Description

Spool adapter/protector for all Polymaker (inc PolyTerra & Polylite), Overture and Inland cardboard spools. Perfect for the Bambu Lab AMS and AMS-Lite.

My original adapter based on the Polymaker version works fantastically with polymaker and overture spools and the AMS but had some limitations. Namely, it had trouble fitting on the AMS Lite due to the inner lip and its rigidty came at the cost of its thickness.

This redesigned version corrects all these issues and provides an even better fit with the cardboard spools. And unlike the super-thin edge-only adapters available elsewhere, this makes use of the oval-sphaped hole to provide a strong connection that wont slide around or slip off while in use.

Notable features include:

  • Snug fit with all overture/polymaker spools (tested personally with multiple variations).
  • Better opening placement of the edge holes
  • Thin edge profile, making it a much better fit for the original AMS (without needing any conversions)
  • Thin face profile, making the spools less bulky and also reducing filament usage and print time
  • Enhanced edge clips which reduce damage to the spool edges compared to the orginal version
  • Makes use of the oval hole to privode a strong fit while in use, while also allowing easy removal

Printing

Prints equally well in PLA and PETG. PETG is recommended to enhance its longetivity (due to better layer adhesion).

Printed fast and with little material (I used Bambu PLA Basic - Jade White)! I've used it with both Overture and Polymaker spools so far with no issues. Just be a bit careful when removing the tab from near the center of the spool. If it's fitting tighter, you might want to make sure you shimmy it and don't pull too hard as I fear it might snap. A thicker print could fix this but I don't even see it as an issue. Bonus is that my favorite silica gel holders JUST manage to fit alongside it. Thx!

Hey, thanks for the kind words and sharing a photo! Ok your note about the locking tab, I’m not sure if you’re already doing it, but I’d highly recommend trying PETG as it’s much higher layer bonding strength (plus it’ll fare much better in a filament dryer). Technically you could print it in TPU and those issues would disappear, but that seems a tad overkill. Even so, the small size and orientation of the tab is something I’m thinking about as although I’ve never had an issue (and I’ve printed a LOT of them), you’re not the only person to note the potential issue.

Replying to @DavidsGotWood :
haha yeah... I actually printed in PLA so that I could then use my cardboard PETG spools... lol! And yeah, I remove them from the spools when not in use, so no big deal there! But thank you that is good advice! edit: one of my spools specifically fit tighter. the other spool I've used this with wasn't tight at all on the tab. IDK if it's spool moisture content or just slightly diff spool sizes or what but just a note

Love the idea of having a little rigidity to the design instead of just having it be a small, thin rim around the edge only. The structure adds a very nice aesthetic touch as well. Printed with black Bambu PETG as I feel it to be a better material for this application especially if the spool is going to go in a dryer at any point. However for its intended use, basic PLA or a PLA plus/pro variant would be more than enough. Thank you for your design!

Thank you so much for your detailed comment and for sharing those print photos. The PETG is exactly what I use for the exact same reasons … and I appreciate the kind words on my “aesthetic choices” 😁.

Works well on my spool of Polyterra. Printed using Bambu Lab P1S using supplied PLA Basic filament.

The spool holder works perfectly. I made an extra large version for the extra spool on the outside of my AMS. The reason is sometimes filament would run next to the spool. The last photo is the adjustment I made for the extra spool on the outside of the AMS

Great print and profile, Will print them in the color of the spool as advised for easy recognition.
