Description

Hi all

The original design was great, thank you FSULAUBACH and whisperit for original geometries (https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:6364915) however, the original designs didn't work quite nicely for me for the following reasons

  1. I hate printing with PETG, it's too stringy and always makes a mess → I printed this backplane and stand with eSun PLA+ and it works absolutely great. It is a tiny bit less heat resistant (75 degrees is when it starts softening) but I have observed no problem whatsoever so far playing Cyberpunk 2077, FF7 remake and Palworld (this one for more than 40hrs now, all on the legion). To further reduce any issues with temperature, I put some heat-resistant tape (https://www.amazon.it/dp/B08RN4J27N?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details&th=1), but this is just a precaution and maybe an unnecessary extra
  2. The air gaps in the grid were a bit too large for me, I think there is a risk that quite big external particles can get in and damage the board. I reduced the grid to something similar to the original official design, and again, I observed no issues at all with temperatures
  3. The SSD cap/cover would just not attach well to the backplane, so I decided to go with two M3*6 screws with flat head (https://www.amazon.it/gp/product/B07ZF2SDW6/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 ) that hold down the cover very well. VERY IMPORTANT: DO NOT print this part with PLA+, the SSDs get really hot so PLA+ won't hold.I printed this part in ABS and it works absolutely great, very simple print. Make sure you print this vertically tho, like in my 3mf file. Again, I've reduced the grid size to avoid stuff getting in.
  4. This is completely up to you, but because I don't use a docking station yet, and I just plug in my Lexar USB-C hub when I want to have more ports/connect to an external device, I added two magnets inside the backstand. They house the 10x3mm magnets from this set: https://www.amazon.it/gp/product/B0BNKFZ45F/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1 . This way I have my lexar hub attached with magnets quite nicely to the legions, not hanging around.

Of course you will need these bad boys as per the original design to attach the joints
https://www.amazon.it/dp/B0B8GN63S2?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details

Installation is exactly as per original design.

Thanks again to FSULAUBACH for the original design, it really helped me to get to this design I'm in love with now :D Happy Legion Go everyone!

I printed it but I had to change the plate for the ssd cover because there were no supports visible in bambu studio. Also because this is based on the fs backplate, the kickstand doesn't close all the way like his design. Overall this is a very nice backplate, probably the best one so far. I also used a heated small screwdriver and made a hole to secure the nvme properly with a screw otherwise it would be rattling inside or could even disconnect itself.

This is great. Have you considered a version without the kickstand? I don't ever use it and am hoping to find a back with the SSD mod that doesn't include a kickstand. Thanks

i think i could easily modify this to keep only backplane and ssd slot, I’ll work on this on the weekend, watch this space my friend ;)

Your design is very good. It would be great if your design was based on whisperit/arcanazen's rather than fsulaubach's. I am referring to the following design: https://makerworld.com/en/models/149656#profileId-163325

Thanks! I can try and see what comes out 🙂 What is it that you would like to change of arcanazen's design? Is it that you prefer the grid and the SSD design of this model?

I gave it a try, but unfortunately, when importing arcanazen's design into my modelling software it says his stl file is several million vertices, which slows down the SW to the point that is unusable. If arcanazen is willing to share the source file I could for sure make the mod.

you need to include the original mod in your attribution. FSUlabauch deserves credit for his awesome work, but since all of these designs originate with my geometry, I would appreciate being attributed too. https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:6364915

Heads up for the amazing work! do you think you could make a version of this based on arcanazen’s version so the kickstand closes all the way? https://makerworld.com/en/models/149656#profileId-163325 Would highly appreciate it 🙏🏻

Did you print with ABS? Did you try printing with manual supports as in the file?

This is absolutely lovely, but I fint the honeycomb holes of the grid a bit too... large. So, dust and so many little things are welcome into the motherboard and/or the vent, and to damage them all..... so I'd need to buy some fiberglass net or whatever and gluing it to the grid, in order to stop dust and whatever else to come in. So, can you make a revisited model of this, with tinier holes on the grid (pretti similar to the original backplate of Legion Go), so one won't need to buy and install fiberglass net on it? It would be lovely!

Hey thanks for your comment! Are you sure you are looking at the correct design I uploaded and not FSULAUBACH's or Whisperit's designs? There is no honeycomb shape on my design, in fact, my grid is almost identical to the one original on the Legion Go, same shape and dimensions, the only difference is that the original has the pill-shaped holes not aligned :)
