Description

Materials required: Magnetic tape, regular glass marbles. See details below.

Tip: Print each plate in a different filament color!

The Marvelous Magnetic Marble Run features a lot of different tracks and tricks. I designed these with my kids as a project during the coronavirus lockdown.

This is an updated version that uses magnetic tape instead of neodymium magnets. I found that magnetic tape works better and is easier to apply. The previous models can be found on Printables and Thingiverse.

Prints in this series:

  • #1 Base Set (this page)
  • #2 Tracks: Additional straight tracks
  • #3 Wheels

This Base Set provides all you need to get started!

It's an easy print of just two plates for the large Bambu printers (P1P, P1S, X1, X1C, etc). I recommend using different filament colors for each plate to get a colorful marble run.

Materials

  • Magnetic tape: I use magnetic tape that is 15mm wide and 1.5mm thick (e.g. from amazon.de). This has worked well on our magnetic white board. In the US, half inch magnetic tape should work (e.g. amazon.com).
Depending on mounting surface, etc you may need stronger tape or you may get away with thinner and weaker tape.

Covering irregular shapes like the curve pieces is a bit challenging. I apply the tape in multiple rows and then use an exacto knife to cut away the excess.

  • Glass marbles: regular glass marbles that measure 5/8" (16mm).

My little daughter (2,5 years old) likes it very much. We are having a lot fun to build a course.

my wife is a teacher and her students loved it. some of the overhangs can be a little tricky in this print so make sure you have good cooling!

middle school, mainly 6-7 grade. she does special education. I’ve had to print a ton more pieces because they have been enjoying it!

That's what I love about 3D printing. It's easy to make more pieces. We started out with a small marble run, but the kids kept asking for more and more parts over time and now we have a huge box full of it :)
