I designed this awesome easy to print pen holder! As you can see, the form is made out of 2 hexagons which are twisted, it's a printception so you have those big layer lines and at the end a customizable end with a nozzle on it so it looks like it's printed with a very big 3D printer!
The dimensions of the pen holder (Part 1) are 91 x 91 mm and a height of 105 mm.
I made a YouTube video about this project:
Printing Part 1, the main pen holder, isn't that difficult and I printed the model at 0,2 mm layer heights, with 3 perimeters and 20% infill without supports.
It took my Anycubic Vyper about 8,5 hours to complete the print and it needed 101 grams (34 meters) of filament (PLA).
Printing the end pieces in the right orientation is important for the end result, here you can see how I orientated them in Cura 5.0 and as you may see, I used tree supports because I like that it's easy to remove:
For the end pieces, I used 0.1 mm layer height (0,4mm nozzle), 3 perimeters and 20% infill.
I printed every end piece separately and it took about 10 minutes 0,3 meters each time to print. All models were print at 55mm/s.
Assembling all the parts together:
You will be able to slide the end pieces (blue) in very easily if you have removed the support material.
You can see I made 2 holes in Part 1, it was in case that the end pieces would be loose.
If it's loose, you can insert the end piece, grab a 1,75-2 mm drill and carefully drill through part 2 when it's inserted in part 1, now you are able to insert raw filament or M2x6 bolts, But normally you shouldn't need any of it.
Remixing this design?
I already made 3 end pieces where the nozzle can rest on but I included 2 STEP-files so you can make your own one!
If you make your own end piece, please share it as a remix of the model, so others can download it, and I'm just curious what you come up with ;)
This is where my inspiration came from + what about that nozzle?
The idea of this penholder, more specifically the big layer lines were inspired by Devin Montes from the youtube channel Make Anything where he made containers and vases a few years ago with that ‘big layer lines' idea. The nozzle I used for my pen holder was downloaded from his square container which you can also download on his profile on MyMiniFactory: https://www.myminifactory.com/object/3d-print-printception-square-container-132177
I printed the nozzle also with 0,1 mm layer heights, 3 perimeters and 20% infill without any supports.
The assembling of the nozzle was very easy.
