Description

I created a Ring 4 camera mount for my Ring doorbell after mounting it haphazardly to my siding. This ended up warping it slightly and just not allowing for a nice clean install. We also had issues with debris and whatever else ending up on top of the camera and leaving residue. I wanted to make something that would distribute the pressure more evenly and allow for a hood to be installed if desired.

My mount varies a bit from some other offerings in that you put M3 nuts in the back and then use standard #8 deck screws to fix it to the siding. Not the screws with the ring. The ring screws are replaced with M3 SHCS fasteners to allow for the camera to be easily removable for service or whatever else. For us this means when the transformer comes in for charging the unit.

The part of this install that might be challenging is installing the M3 nuts in the back. Two of the hexs are pretty deep. To avoid movement when you put the fasteners in the hole, I made some plugs that go over the top of the M3 nuts. Push the ntus all the way to the bottom of the hole and then hammer the plug in. It is press fit and is supposed to be a challenge so that it doesn't come out.

Another note on this unit is the hole location for the deck screws. I put it right at the peaks of the siding. This is because the siding is thickest at this point and provides the most bite for the screws if you aren't able to get all the way back to mounting surface. Worked great for me. There are also more holes than needed so don't feel like it's required to use all 6.

Hopefully this can save you a few dollars as the Ring unit costs around $16 plus shipping time. And this one allows for a hood if you want, though it isn't required.

Required fasteners:

(6) #8 - 1 5/8" deck screws or so (does not require all fasteners)

(4) M3 nuts

(4) M3 x 12mm SHCS with the hood installed

(4) M3 x 10mm SHCS without the hood installed

Potential Issue

I designed this unit to be used with stuff that I have on hand from building other models. Most people that 3D print now have a set of M3 SHCS laying around. But this can cause an issue with closing the unit up. The heads of the SHCS sit a little higher than the screws that ring provided for the top camera mounting holes. This is where the tabs also go for the battery cover, so there is some slight interference. If you don't have the locking screw it will sit up a little. The way around this is to use the locking screw or to use M3 low profile screws. The McMaster Carr part number is 92855A313. I personally am using the locking screw (if I hadn't dropped it during this install) so won't be buying the low profile screws.
