關嫣 Kwan Yen is inspired (we never make real characters) by the daughter of Guan Yu, a legendary character from the Three Kingdoms era. Her name, according to legend, incited a diplomatic incident. It can be read as -her name- or as "could" . Apparently when a messenger from a neighbor state came asking Guan Yu to marry his daughter to the son of the neighbor state's owner, Guan Yu replied to him and send him back.
The response the messenger delivered was "How could the Daughter of the Tiger (i.e. Guan Yu) marry the son of a dog"? Thus a war started.
However, the message could also be read as "Guan Yen can marry your puppy (it's an accepted "cute" way to refer to an offspring?)
Her design carries 3 meanings.
"Red" , because she's the daughter of Guan Yu, who is famous for having a red face (he's often painted with that color)
"Horse" , well, you all see the horse. Your printers will too.😏
"Exceptional", because that time's society was very male-dominated. A female warrior riding into battle is an exceptional story.
And no, Hua Mulan lived quite a few centuries before Guan Yu.😌
