This model is for the WASP 3D Printable Homeware design contest.
After seeing the given contraints, I wanted to design something that looked like it broke the rules. Something that seemed impossible to be printed continuously and without supports. With that in mind, I knew I would need to utilize the 3D printer's ability to print free-standing slopes.
Playing around with slopes sparked a thought about one of my favorite coffee table designs. Years ago I stumbled upon the Nook, designed by David Pickett, and instantly loved it. Since a coffee table seemed out of the question, given the build volume, I decided to design a bookshelf inspired by the Nook.
The model you see naturally formed out of the design constraints. I almost feel as if I didn't design it. The contest designed it. I wanted the style to be contemporary, so I merged the hard vertical and horizontal lines of a bookshelf with the smooth curves of a bubble. The BubbleShelf was born.
