The Madonna of Cesky Krumlov ranks among the fundamental works of the International style in sculpting. It was purchased at the beginning of the 20th century for the collection of the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. The composition of this famous statue was repeated many times in contemporary copies and variants, the Madonna of Hallstatt near Salzburg being one of them. Due to the lack of material, the statue is made of artificial stone instead of marly limestone of Prague origin. In Salzburg, this was a common practice. The sculptor allegedly worked on a cast block; the soft material, not unlike the fresh quarry stone, enabled him to use devices for wood-carving.
