Description

I needed a somewhat low profile rack to store my filament on a counter with cabinets above. I came across these models & determined they fit the bill perfectly. However, the original models needed M3 screws threaded directly into the plastic, which easily stripped. Coarser threaded screws probably would work fine, but I wanted to work with what I had, so I modified the models to accept heat set inserts.

I also printed these dowels I found. They are sufficient for the job, but not the most durable. One of mine snapped at the base of the threads. They're also very tall & narrow, making them somewhat difficult to print. I had to use a wide brim with 0 gap, requiring some post processing to clean up the brim area. Overall I don't really recommend them. A wooden dowel from a hardware store would be a lot easier and more durable, but there's something satisfying about the whole thing being printed.

The holes for the dowels are 20mm; the dowels are a little over 19mm or ¾ inch.

The holes for the threaded inserts are 4.4mm. I used these: https://a.co/d/dFlPdnV which are 4mm deep, but the part is only 3.5mm thick there so keep that in mind. The insert can protrude 0.5mm and not interfere with the dowels, but be sure not to insert too far.

My rack is 5 dowel sections, which comes out to about 3ft long. I used two middle pieces for support, which left me with 3 x ~10" sections. Given a spool is about 70mm/2.75" wide, this allows some extra space for vacuum bag ports.

Printed with:

0.4mm nozzle

0.2mm layer height

10-15% gyroid infill is sufficient

I used 3 walls on the support pieces to have a good amount of material for the inserts to hold

4 walls on the dowels for the best chance of survival

These settings are already set in the .3mf file for Bambu printers.
