Description

Most of the filament clips which are stick-on have been either too small (not enough tape surface area to stay on) or have been curved internally which makes them hard to use with one hand and can also cause the filament to snap inside.

These clips have a 25mm x 17mm surface area and point downwards slightly to angle the sharp end of the filament towards the reel, which helps stop it from breaking through the bag if you keep yours in bags (I do). You fit the clip straight across (see pic) and that leaves the channel at a slight angle. Remember in an AMS you can only put clips on the right-side of the reel as you look at the AMS, or they catch on the fins in the bottom. I put two on each spool at opposite sides, so your end is never too far from a clip.

Cutting double-sided tape is the worst part of this job, so I've made a jig to help. Put a long piece of tape top to bottom, touching up against the ridge so there's a little gap on the side as shown. Then cut through all the slots, past the tape and into that gap. This leaves you 10 pieces of tape stuck on by 3mm on one end, and free on the other, the exact width you need. You can either peel these off one at a time and stick them on the clips, or you can put the clips on with the tape still on the jig. A bit fiddly - I prefer to peel them off.

With very full spools I've found you can put them in by pulling the filament away from the edge a little bit, and wiggling them down.

I've used PETG to make the clips, for flexibility and heat resistance in the filament dryers. The tape I've used is reinforced carpet tape, for strength and heat resistance, but any strong 25mm wide double-sided tape will do.
