Description

Summary: Large and Thin Plates joined end-to-end, no glue needed! Great way to exceed the build plate limits.

My wife asked for a sock drawer divider for a very popular IKEA night stand. The problem was the length of the dividers being larger than the build plate.

So, how do you join rigidly 2mm thick plates without using glue or adding extra bulk? ?

I experimented with different ideas and I think I found the right combination for the perfect end-to-end joint. Once joined together, the plates are rigid and cannot be easily taken apart.

Even if you do not need a drawer divider, you might still be interested in seeing how two thin plates can be joined into a much larger one with no glue. That means there are no limits on how long such plates can be!!!

The current profile is the first iteration that made my wife happy.

Do your own testing:

If you want to do your own experiment with different filaments or layer thickness, feel free to download the R&D files containing different draft angles for the zipper joint. Find out what is the minimal draft angle that would hold your tiles together in all three directions for your specific use cases.

Plates 1 and 2: Main Divider Plates

On the first two plates you will find the two main pieces of a 16 ¾" long divider.

To join them simply align the zipper and gently tap each bit in its place. Once assembled, the connection is very rigid and the two parts stay nicely aligned. They will act as one piece!

Plate 3: Bottom Support

You can use the main divider with the bottom support from plate 3 (shown in the picture above). This way it will stand on its own.

Plates 4 and 5: Side Dividers

I have also included two side dividers if you want to join multiple main dividers together:

  • 8.75" long x 4" high on plate 4
  • 7" long full height on plate 5.

They can be inserted in the slots on the main divider, every inch. The design allows the use of side dividers end to end as shown below.

What other sizes do you need? Drop your request in the comments and I will add them.

I really like the concept of this, but it would be better if it was parametric as well of have the option to attach multiple main dividers together in order to accommodate any size drawer. Another option would be to share the source files available to customize to a specific need. I would like to print this but unfortunately it won't work for the drawer size that I have.

Great mind think alike. I will publish a more universal system shortly. What drawer size do you have?

What purpose do the cutouts at the bottom of the 7 inch Cross divider serve? Thank you.

Works well as dividers for a sock drawer, also. :)

This design looks fantastic! Do you still have plans to upload parametric STEP files for individual customization?

More to come. In meantime, please share pictures of your drawer’s configuration. How many divider parts are you using in the picture?
