Description

A set of hanging decorations for your New Year's celebrations! They include:

  • Spiral: prints in 18 minutes and stretches to approximately 20-24" with medallion attached
  • Medallions: eight to choose from
  • Bunting: a banner for your wall that spells “Happy New Year”

Important note about colour: I made these thin on purpose to reduce print-time. This means that there may be some colour bleed through depending upon your filament. This can be avoided by careful choice of colour. You can also make the medallions thicker but do so with the following in mind. First, Bambu Studio will only do three layers of colour. Second, changing the thickness may interfere with how the colour layers behave. I.e, you may get floating sections which won't print well.

Trouble? Questions? Comments? Please don't hesitate to get in touch!

Assembly Notes

  • The hanging hole on the outermost spiral is designed to fold 90 degrees.
  • To attach the medallions to the spiral, fold the wings of the medallion hangers inwards and insert through hole of spiral. Unfold the wings to keep it in place.
  • On the off-chance the medallion hanger wings break off, I've included a hole through which you can thread some string.

Troubleshooting

  • Dirty Bed: A dirty bed is the number one cause of prints separating from the bed. Touching the surface of your plate transfers skin oils which prevent models from sticking. If a model comes loose from the bed, clean your plate with warm water and plain dish soap. After cleaning, avoid touching the print surface.
  • Wrong Plate/Printer: double check that Studio shows the correct printer and plate. It may be different from the print profile.
  • Wrong filament: Change the filament to reflect what you're going to be using.
  • Rough top surface: A rough top surface means that the printer is over-extruding filament. This can be tweaked by calibrating your filament and/or decreasing the top surface flow ratio. To see this setting, you will need to turn on Developer mode (click the down arrow beside the file menu, select Preferences, then check the box beside “Developer mode.”) The setting will be found on the Quality tab under “Advanced.”

Print Settings

Spirals

  • Layer height: 0.16mm (this creates a strong yet thin spiral)
  • Elephant foot compensation: 0 (it helps the hanging loops be stronger)
  • Detect thin walls: On (creates stronger holes for hanging)
  • Top surface pattern: Concentric (increases print speed and it looks cool)
  • Bottom surface pattern: Concentric (same as above)
  • Brim: none

Medallions

  • Layer height: 0.2mm (do not change; it may affect the colours)
  • Elephant foot compensation: 0 (it helps the first layer stick better especially for the more complicated designs)
  • Initial layer flow: 1.1 (I find it helps the filament fill in the gaps)
  • Detect thin walls: On (helps fill in small parts of the designs)
  • Brim: none

Bunting

  • Layer height: 0.2mm (do not change; it may affect the colours)
  • Elephant foot compensation: 0 (it helps the first layer stick better especially for the more complicated designs)
  • Initial layer flow: 1.1 (I find it helps the filament fill in the gaps)
  • Brim: none

About the Model

Hanging spiral ornaments aren't something new. You can buy them online and in party supply stores. However, I always found them to be of cheap quality compared to their cost. I wondered if I could reproduce them using my 3d printer. I had three clear goals in mind: they couldn't take long to make, they had to be cheap, and they had to be stronger than the ones you can buy. After printing a dozen or so spirals, tweaking as I went, I came up with something that met my goals. The big spiral takes 18 minutes to print, costs roughly $0.25 CAD, and is stronger than the ones I've bought in the past. Mission accomplished!

P.S.

Depending on how these do, I may create more medallions for other holidays. Please let me know what you think!

Filament used in display models:

  • Basic Black PLA (Bambu)
  • Glorious Gold (Spectrum)
  • Basic White PLA (Bambu)

Thank you so much! They look great! Great job on the scaling. I had hoped people would do that as I had run out of time to do it manually. Yes, I'm planning on doing other celebrations. Stay tuned! :)
