Description

This is a revision of Brandon Raineri's Spool container. One small frustration is that it's so well designed that it was hard to tell which end opened as the “Cap” and which was the container or “cup.” This led to a good chance I was spilling silica beads all over 😅.

The major revision here is adding a label to the cap part with a small text addition to label it CAP.

I've adjusted the speeds in my print profile and finish strategies which I like a little better.

They fit Bambu Lab spools perfectly. Also Hatchbox PLA spools (image included).

The filament must be dry for quality PETG printing - holes won't be clear and you'll get buildup. Also, vent your machine.

To Assemble

  • Push the end caps into their appropriate (size is key) parts.
    • Use superglue or E6000 linked below if you'd like to assemble caps with bodies (not the screw mating though).
  • Add desiccant to the container.
  • Screw together container on the spool.

Tip: Dessicant is reusable. Put beads in a glass container and microwave for 1-2 mins until color returns to normal. Let cool and reuse.

The 70c spool does not work with this version

Trouble?

  • If you're having any issues printing, make sure to dry your PETG to <20% humidity.
  • Lower the volumetric flow rate to 9 mm/s in the filament profile.
  • Slow the print speeds.
  • Easiest cure-all fix is to just put the printer on Silent mode which prints at 50% and that usually solves a ton of PETG quality issues.
  • Use nano adhesive on bed if you're having sticking problems.

Was initially going to rate 4 stars because the holes didn’t print very well in PLA Matte on my cool plate. In fact, I had some warping when printing a full plate (3) on the cool plate. Out of curiosity I switched to the Textured PEI plate and WOW! Perfect print of 3, turned out fantastic so I recommend if printing this in PLA - do it on a PEI or PEX plate. Photo shows Cool Plate on left and PEI on right.

My computer is currently down so I’ve been stuck doing limited prints from the Handy app. Interestingly enough, when I change materials or plates it will reslice…pretty cool feature.

Persistent print failures which is too bad because I really like the design. I tried a couple times, lots of first layer issues, adhesion was good. I know I had good dry filament (dry box at 10%) and I've had successful prints with the same roll. I am newer to the X1C and PETG but know enough to say I have the machine set up right. Since I couldn't get a successful print, MakerWorld won't let give more than a 3 star. Ideas? I'd prefer to give this a better rating.

PETG is pretty tricky if you don’t have the filament dialed in. Is it Bambu? Can try silent mode for the first couple layers. Ambient temperature matters a lot, definitely needs to be vented. even on the Textured plate I use nano adhesive at times when it won’t stay.

printed great. hole size if perfect for smaller range of desiccant beads. snap together is super tight.

Nice build! I’m a bit confused because it seems to work well with my Basic Reusable Spools -White. At any rate: Good work. Thank you for sharing it with us.
