Description

This is a 2nd Stage air filtration system based on thrutheframe's excellent Bento box recirculating air filter. the goal of course being to remove as many VOC's as possible. This is a add on to the full bento box to add extra filtration.

FEATURES

  • Second stage air filtration that creates a sort of negative pressure system to filter air that comes out the chamber fan opening.
    • I torture tested this by running it without the bento box on. on a 2 hour print with ABS the smell in the room became perceptible after about an hour, indicating that it was doing a pretty good job on its own. When used with the bento box even my wifes Burton Guster level supersniffer was not bothered.
  • Air bypass ensures it is not pulling excessive air out of the chamber causing loss of heat retention
  • Can be turned off when not needed.
  • When off it works as an excellent exhuast muffler.
  • AMS compatible

WHAT YOU WILL NEED

  • I intentionally didn't include the hepa and carbon portions of the original bento box. Support thrutheframe and print plates 2,3,4 from his print profile. you can remove the model for the fans as I had to modify it to run the wires.
  • M3 x4mm (4.2mm OD) threaded inserts - I used ones from this kit: https://amzn.to/3RKi3KF alternatively if you arent in a rush. Aliexpress is a super cheap source of getting lots of threaded inserts. you can never have enough for 3d printing.
  • m3x25mm cap head screws x4, and m3x6mm scews x8 - this kit is excellent if you dont already have them: https://amzn.to/3H2TMKM
  • SPST round rocker switch https://amzn.to/3tsDHuR
  • 5.5x2.1mm DC power jack https://amzn.to/3S1UH4k
  • 40x20 fan - https://amzn.to/48C0y6w
    • If you're starting fresh, The ideal solution IMO is to print the DK riser and the original bento box, buy 2 sets of the 24 V fans from the link above, a set of 24 V COB LEDs , a 3 way splitter, and then you can run both bento box fan sets, and the LEDs off the power supply from the LEDs
    • Pay attention to voltage. If you have a bento box, pick one that matches your bento box and use a splitter like one of these: https://amzn.to/41Fp4AW. If you did the 5V modification to run 5V fans in the original bento box you could tap that same power source and run 5V fans.
    • 40x28 fans are an option. I found the 40x20 adequate, but here is a link if you would like more power. https://amzn.to/3RKqFAU
  • Power supply - I keep a massive supply of these from old electronics and can always find one to work, but if you need to you could buy one of these. https://amzn.to/3H2jKxX **some links are affiliate links.

are you still using this and how effective has it been? i was thining of adding this on to my bento set up(thermoreguled and plugged into psu). but if its just "ok", then i will just vent outside with the hideous hose.

I used it the day before yesterday on a 5 hr Bambu labs ABS print and the smell was virtually undetectable. I had both bento and this running. of note my poop chute is covered with the magnetic poop chute model I have here and I taped the hinge side of the door with electrical tape so it stay closed. if your poop chute is just open some smell will inevitably get out.

Replying to @Imaginarydave :
that's what i need to hear. i will have to get the poop chute to make it more airtight. did you have to do anymore modding to the x1c case to make sure it would contain the fumes? also how long does your carbon and hepa last? i just printed the bento mod with the electric thermoregulator and wiring it into the psu, but i think i will wire the smoke stack into regulator so i can print pla with the door shut. i will need to lower temp regulator but small price to pay.--too damn loud!

The HEPA filter in the BentoBox is there to protect the activated carbon. If this is being run in reverse you should swap the HEPA and Carbon to maximize the life of the carbon. You could add a 3rd loose sediment air filter to the top to minimize carbon dust escaping if that becomes a concern. Edit: Very cool design by the way.

Hi there, could you please share the 3D model of the printer? I just need accurate screw hole locations for the back of the P1S really, but the whole model would be cool. Hope you can help. Thanks :) Edit: It's ok, I found this... https://makerworld.com/en/models/235041

The bottom of the base is wide open. Is this by design? wouldn't exhaust leak out of there and not go through filtration?

it is bringing air in there. and from the filter. if it was closed it would suck air out of the machine - effecting temperature stability. the overall airflow is through the filters. it is by design.

Is this in addition to a bentobox inside? Or is it supposed to replace the bentobox inside by bringing it outside?

definitely in addition

Just an FYI I've found those winsinn fans to be hit or miss. They fail pretty quickly in my experience. Look forward to making this though.

Cool design - So are we supposed to face the fans towards the carbon filter stage vs the opposite on an internal Bento Box?

yes

Could this be done on 5v? I made the 24v to 5v mod that pulls power off the ams and have an extra 5v usb port.
