Liu Kang(in Chinese kanji 劉康, in pinyin: Liúkāng) is the main character in the Mortal Kombat series of fighting games. He is a stereotypical character, a fusion of both Eastern and Western traditions in martial arts films.
Although in the name of a Shaolin monk, his style and mannerisms are more Westernized and his appearance based on that of Bruce Lee. He moves quickly and possesses formidable fighting skills. Liu Kang is one of the best warriors in the Earth Kingdom along with Kung Lao. Throughout the series, Liu Kang has gradually been shown as the main hero, becoming champion after the first Mortal Kombat tournament and then follows Raiden's quest. His romantic interest is in Princess Kitana, but he is unable to commit to a relationship due to matters of his duty (protector of the land as the Mortal Kombat champion) while Kitana has to remain on Edenia/Outworld as the reigning princess.
In a sudden move that altered the course of the Mortal Kombat series, Liu Kang was brutally killed by Shang Tsung (who had the help of Quan Chi), Liu Kang had previously defeated Shang Tsung, but Shang Tsung in an act of cowardice returned to kill Liu Kang in the prelude to Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, his soul was consumed by Tsung. He returned in Mortal Kombat: Deception, albeit as a zombie. He also co-starred alongside Kung Lao, Sub-Zero, Scorpion and others in his last adventure game Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks, and returns again in Mortal Kombat: Armageddon.
In the second timeline, while his role is very similar to the first timeline of events, several events that occurred in this timeline such as the deaths of all his teammates trying to prevent Shao Kahn from conquering Earth Realm lead Liu Kang to have an antagonist role against Raiden's mission that inevitably ended in his own death at the hands of the God of Thunder. Upon being resurrected as a Returned One by Quan Chi, the grudge over his death made him a severe threat to his former allies, which intensified as he became the new ruler of Hell after Shinnok's defeat, leading him to ally with the Titanide of Time, Kronika to create a new history where Raiden does not exist, which ended with him reuniting with his own version of the past before becoming corrupted and absorbing the soul of his other self to become one being. However once Raiden discovers that Kronika has been manipulating them into killing each other by considering them a real threat if they fought together, in a turn of events, Raiden merges with Liu Kang turning him into a God, losing his own divinity in the process, but in doing so, he manages to bring him back to life, unite him into one being, free him from his returned side and ends up helping him defeat Kronika once and for all by having Liu Kang, now turned into a God, use the power of the Hourglass to create a third timeline where Liu Kang is now the protector of the Earth Realm.
