3D model description

Jaw-style hair clips usually use a torsion spring made from a coil of wire. And this works, but if one is making a hair clip from scratch, sourcing such a spring isn’t exactly easy. But binder clips are easily available from many sources, so I designed a hair clip to use a couple binder clips as the spring. Unfortunately, the range of motion requires two clips, but it doesn’t take up that much more space.

It would make an easy functional project or custom gift, and is an excellent way to test new color combinations (an area in which I’m not very creative). The central ‘bridge’ piece is necessary, but it is also meant to be ornamental. I’ve included the dimensions if one would prefer to customize it. I’ve also included an .STL for an oversized version of the jaw.

To complete this project, one will need two 1.25” (32 mm) binder clips, and about 70g of filament. The oversized version takes 135 g of filament. The binder clip jaws must be .75” long (19 mm) or shorter to fit this design.
