3D model description

Note : This is a duplicate of a design I had uploaded a few days earlier, but which had some technical issues that reuploading fixed. I deleted the original Thing. I apologize for any confusion while I straightened it out. You can also check out a slightly different version of this design: Spinning Star Circle Ornament 2.
It is similar to the hanging versions of the ornaments on this Thing design, except all rings spin on the same axis which makes it look a little more like a traditional Ball Ornament when they are fanned out.

While I was looking for an ornament model to print, I found some designs I liked, but they did not exactly fit what I wanted, so I made my own. After I printed one, I was pleasantly surprised with how freely the rings spin, which makes it a pretty great fidget spinner too. (There are more than enough designs for those out there, but I felt it's worth mentioning.)

This is a gyroscopic concentric ring design with multiple axes of rotation. It's easy to print, even if your printer isn't perfectly calibrated. The designs take a lot less time to print than similar designs I saw, probably because of the space between the rings. It is print-in-place, so no assembly is required, and it should work as soon as you take it off the print bed, with no need for post-processing.

I designed this from scratch in OpenSCAD, but I drew a lot of inspiration from Yet Another Gyroscopic Christmas Ornament by marcoalici.

I'm including 4 versions (2 sizes, with and without the top hanger). I am hoping to make this basic design a customizable Thing soon, so that people can make their own version of the ornament/spinner, but I don't know that it will be ready by this Christmas. I am including the .scad file for the 6 ring version that includes the hanging hook, and you can make the others by changing the proper variables. I made the design highly configurable. If you customize the code and want to share the model or code, that's great, but please give credit.

I printed in standard PLA with normal settings, no raft, no supports. The dual color examples are printed on a single extruder machine by swapping filament colors halfway through the print.

If anyone has ideas they would like to see added to this design, let me know. I welcome all feedback and would love to see makes or remixes. Merry Christmas!
