Dormitories should be set up in early April before calving or in late summer for the following year.

Bats are heat seekers. This factor is therefore paramount in locating a dormitory. Make sure your dormitory faces south, southeast or east, so that it receives maximum sunlight to maintain a high temperature inside (ideally, 8 to 10 hours of sunshine a day). It's best to place the dormitory where there's almost no shade.

Fix the dormitory at a minimum height of 3 meters from the ground, preferably on a building or post to avoid the risk of predation. Dormitories set up in trees are harder for bats to spot. As well as providing shade and reducing sunlight, the branches hinder bat flight.
