Buy a 3d printer. ‘Assemble your Sd printer, there are plenty of videos on YouTube to help you with this, Print all files downloaded for the Larsen hobby CNC. In the file name for each part there should be an “x" then a number, this, means that you need to print that many. For example, torchholderX1 means just print one of these. Items to purchase: A board to mount it to, | used a sheet of 18mm MDF. Round tubes 25mm OD (outside diameter) for the runners, you can make these along as you want, (within reason, too long you might start to get sag). 6mm timing belt for 3d printers 20 skateboard bearings (should be 22mm OD 8mm ID and 7mm wide) 16x m8 by 45mm and 6x m8 by 30mm bolts and nuts 20 washers Air compressor Plasma cutter Time to start assembly, make sure your tube fits in the ends and also the X carriages, it should be a tight fi, if not you may need to drill and tap a hole so you can put a bolt in to keep it tight Fit your Y axis tubes into the 4 end mounts and serew them to your MDF board, making sure you keep both rails parallel. Slide your X axis tubes into the carriages (once you have put bearings and washers into them you should have no play once slid onto rails. if you do you might need to scale down slightly in your slicer) Put the X axis tubes into the Y axis carriages, then slide the entire assembly into the Y axis rails. Screw the Y axis ends to the board Now disassemble your 3d printer. Pull the screen, motherboard assembly and the power pack off. Open up the motherboard box and unplug the heater bed and the hot end. You can remove all the extrusion, hot end and bed, once they unplug from the motherboard. You should be left with just the motherboard box, screen and the main power supply. Remove and keep the end stops and the idlers from the X & Y axis. You need to attach the end stops to the end stop brackets ‘which will clamp around your pipe. You need one on the Y and X axis. Put bearings in the X axis carriage. You should run one bearing in the slots and when you bolt it to the X axis rails you will ikely need a couple of washers and 3 washers on each vertical bolt. Once this is bolted up, slide the bolts at the back forward, to get a nice tight clamp on the rails, do up slightly tighter than finger tight. You will need to bolt your torch holder to the bottom of the X carriage. Extend the Y end stop, X end stop and Z & X stepper motor wires to the length of your Y axis rails. (I suggest you do one wire at a time to ensure correct orientation to avoid frying the stepper motors). Keep the micro switches and Z stepper motor as far away from the main board as possible to stop EMF interference from the plasma cutter. Bolt the motherboard, power pack and screen to the controller holder. Drill some holes to add some screws. Get the timing bett and feed it through one end of the Y carriage, fold it over on itself and clamp it with a belt clip, Run it down to the end with the idler and in this bracket, you will need to put the Y axis idler from your printer, the bolt should fit through and screw in on the other side. Once done, run the belt around, back through the carriage over top of the top bearings, out the other side and down around the stepper motor which should already be fitted. Bring it back and fit it around the belt tensioner and put the bett clip in. Put a cable tie through the belt tensioner and through the other hole on the carriage, pull tight until the belt is tight. Do the same as the X, but at the end where the idler goes, you will need to get the X axis idler from your printer and run an 8mm bolt through it. Use two X idler brackets and bolt that to the X idler, which will be located on top of the other Y carriage. Once this, is done you can turn it on and test to make sure the carriages are moving freely with no binding, Bolt the Z axis stepper motor to the piasma on/off switch and mount two micro switches off to the side. On the end of the stepper motor, mount the plasma on/off lever and wire the Z axis end stop to one of the micro switches. This needs to be in the orientation of always on, switched off. The other micro switch you will need to wire to your plasma cutter in the orientation always off, switched on. Tidy cables and run for test operation. Larsen Motorsports hobby CNC cutter
